What is the true meaning of good mental health and how to measure it?

At peace

It is definitely important to have a good mental health but what exactly does it mean to have good mental health? How do you define it? How do you know if you are having a good mental health day? What is the criterion?

Initially, I defined it as being happy. I thought that if I am happy all the time then I am having a good mental health day. But happiness is just one of the many emotions humans can express.

We cannot expect ourselves to be happy all the time. Life takes us on an upward and downward journey where we witness happiness and sadness respectively.

It is obvious that we are happy when a good event takes place in our lives and it is equally healthy to display sadness when things take a downward turn.

So, it would be cruel and frustrating to put so much pressure on yourself to be happy all the time because we need equal freedom to grieve for our losses. It would not be absolutely right to think of happiness as a measure of good mental health. So what is it?

Having peace of mind can serve as a better measure of good mental health. When we are at peace we think clearly, make better decisions which indicates that our mind is healthy.

The ability to do basic things that require physical strength like walking, lifting signifies good physical health. Similarly, the ability to perform daily tasks that require mental effort like decision making , interacting  signifies good mental health which mandates us to have a peace of mind.

How you can handle feelings of insecurity with a simple shift in perspective.

Insecurity is a bug that gets to everyone regardless of their age and profession. So don’t worry, you’re not alone! It is a feeling of inadequacy that makes us second guess ourselves. Not the most pleasant of emotions and you want to get rid of it but it keeps creeping up on you now and then , just like a second-rate Mojo Jojo.

Why is it dangerous?

Second guessing ourselves is not the only harm it is causing us. Think of all the joy that is sucked out, all the time we waste by letting our insecurities get the best of us. We lose a lot of opportunities, want to go and hide but most importantly we start to lose our voice, the essence of who we are.

What can you do ?

As Children and as adults, we all have at some point in our lives compared ourselves with someone. Maybe a friend, maybe a cousin. The feeling is horrible, I know, and of no use at all. It’s not helping you or anyone.

The person you are comparing yourself to might be good at xyz thing and that is great because everyone is unique which leaves you free to discover your own powers

The more and better you know yourself and the things that you can do, the less you feel the need to compare yourself with someone else.

Insecurity about being judged.

People judge and have opinions about that goal you couldn’t achieve this year, you’re too fat, too thin, too tall, too short, etcetera. Such circumstances inevitably lead to feelings of insecurity and could do more damage if not put in check sooner.

Sometimes we cannot immediately change what has happened but we can change our perspective. Turn your insecurity as a inspiration for yourself and for others for how you are handling it. How you are not bogged down by the judgements from others, how you are surviving despite the many hurdles. Inspire yourself!

The next time insecurity creeps in, remember to have a little shift in perspective because anything other than this is just not that way it’s done

Live for today.

This is something we all have heard plenty of times in various forms like “sieze the day” etcetera. We all hear it but we rarely understand the importance of it.

This mindset is especially hard to tap into since we are always overloaded with the stress of what lies ahead of us. There’s always a problem to solve , an issue that’s bothering us, worries of tomorrow

It’s not our fault, it’s just how the world has shaped us. Fortunately, coming out of it is still in our hands.

Living for today doesn’t mean we don’t plan for tomorrow. We do. However, the gist is not to get caught up in tomorrow

You make your plans and let the Universe take it’s course. Meanwhile, you give your present your undivided attention and just live for today because anything other than this is just not the way it’s done!
